| Although the appearance of age spots and discoloration might seem like an obvious indication of aging skin, they are instead our body's attempt to protect itself from sun exposure by overproducing melanin. Also called liver spots or sun spots, age spots are blemishes that range in color from dark yellow to black and locate themselves in exposed areas of the body, such as the face, hands, shoulders, arms or forehead. | |||

Only occasionally do discolored spots pose a serious medical risk. They sometimes obscure detection of skin cancer, and, rarely, can indicate accumulated wastes or a bodily dysfunction. Even when harmless, these blotchy patches pose a tough cosmetic challenge that can make us look and feel much older than our years. Laser treatment can remove discolored imperfections. Selective absorption of laser light pulses by melanin-containing skin cells causes the targeted cells to scatter and degenerate while significantly decreasing potential damage to surrounding tissues. The dead cells are then removed from the skin by the body's immune or lymphatic system. Typically found on the face, shoulders and other exposed parts of the body, discolorations may be diagnosed as benign pigmented lesions. These lesions include everything from bluish/purplish, black or otherwise discolored spots to freckles and sun-damaged skin areas. If you have any such benign conditions, chances are you're a candidate for treatment at Laser Vein Center. |
